Quad Slams “Intimidating Manoeuvres” Amid China’s Clashes with Philippines, Beijing Claps Back

The four-nation Quad grouping on July 29 expressed “serious concern” about dangerous maneuvers in the South China Sea. Foreign ministers from Australia, India, Japan, and the US also pledged to bolster maritime security in a joint statement, following talks in Tokyo. Australia’s Penny Wong, India’s S. Jaishankar, Japan’s Yoko Kamikawa, and the US’s Antony Blinken called for a “free and open” Pacific. The joint statement did not name China directly but referenced a series of recent confrontations between Chinese and Philippine vessels.
