Author puts a ‘face’ on wartime Japan through cartoon satire

Writer Juan Takai is a war junkie, but not the type who ducks bullets to get the story.

Rather, the 29-year-old prefers to delve into historical materials to put a human face on war.

His latest book, “Kichiku Bei-Ei Manga Zenshu” (Collection of Manga on American and British Devils), looks at changes in the way the Allied Forces were portrayed in satirical illustrations in Japan during World War II.

The voluminous work features upward of 460 caricatures from popular magazines and other publications from between 1941 and 1945.
